Local accountants and tax advisers, Trueman Brown, warn self-employed taxpayers that some local councils will allow them to defer council tax payments.
Local Councils are going to help the self-employed through the coronavirus outbreak by offering the self-employed the chance to defer Council Tax payments for a few months.
The Local Authority will allow the self-employed to spread their Council Tax payments over the latter part of the financial year if they find themselves in financial difficulties because of the drop of income arising from the coronavirus outbreak.
The Plymouth Local Authority Councillor, Mark Lowry, who is a Cabinet Member for Finance said:
“We know that the government is addressing the situation, but most self-employed will not get any payment from the Government until June.
We want to help where we can. Anyone who is self-employed – hairdressers, plumbers and electricians, will be able to defer payment and we can recalculate the bills to spread the payments between July and March.”
April payment will still be taken from those who pay by direct debit, but the balance can be shared between July and March 2021.
It is understood that Plymouth Council will take the April 2020 payment from those who normally pay by direct debit, with the remaining liability being paid between July 2020 and March 2021.
We know that a similar arrangement is in force in Thurrock who have sent out an email today to Council Taxpayers with the authority area.
It is vital that the self-employed, who wish to take advantage of Council Tax deferral, visit their local authority website to ascertain whether they can make this claim.
